Betta (Siamese Fighting Fish) Tank Mates

A male betta is a territorial loner — its best "tank mates" are animals it does not read as a rival.

The betta's flowing fins make it a target for nippers, and its territorial streak makes it risky with other anabantoids and brightly-coloured, similar-shaped fish. The combinations the engine clears are mostly bottom-dwellers and clean-up invertebrates that stay out of a betta's way. In anything under 10 gallons, a betta is genuinely happiest alone.

Tank & group guidance: Keep one male betta only. A community betta needs at least a 10-gallon, well-planted tank with broken sightlines so tankmates can stay out of its patrolled zone — 5 gallons is a betta-only setup. The planner below is pre-set to 5 gallons — add your real list to test it.

      ✓ Good starter plan

1× Betta (Siamese Fighting Fish), 1× Nerite Snail, 3× Amano Shrimp

The classic low-conflict betta setup: a single male with algae-grazing invertebrates it ignores.

      Common questions

What fish can live with a betta?

The safest companions are non-nipping bottom-dwellers and invertebrates — kuhli loaches, corydoras (in a big enough tank), snails and shrimp. Avoid fin-nippers (tiger barbs), other anabantoids (gouramis, paradise fish), and brightly-coloured fish a betta may mistake for a rival.

      Can a betta live alone?

Yes — a betta does not need tankmates and is often happiest in a heated, filtered, planted tank of its own. Tankmates are an option for larger tanks, not a requirement.

      Can two bettas live together?

No. Male bettas fight, often to the death, so the planner blocks any plan with more than one. Even females (a "sorority") are an advanced, risky setup, not a beginner one.
