Dwarf Gourami Tank Mates

A dwarf gourami is a peaceful top-water centrepiece that mixes well with most small community fish.

It is calm toward other species but the males are aggressive toward each other and toward other gouramis, so keep just one. The engine clears small peaceful schoolers and bottom-dwellers, while flagging fin-nippers (the gourami's trailing feelers are a target) and other anabantoids. Mass-bred stock can carry disease, so buy from a good source.

      Common questions

What fish can live with a dwarf gourami?

Small, peaceful community fish: neon and ember tetras, rasboras, corydoras, kuhli loaches and peaceful shrimp. Avoid fin-nippers and other gouramis, which males will not tolerate.

Can I keep two dwarf gouramis together?

Two males will fight, so keep only one male. A male-and-female pair can work in a larger, well-planted tank, but a single fish is the safest choice for a community.

      Are dwarf gouramis aggressive?

Toward other species they are generally peaceful and shy. The aggression is mostly directed at other male gouramis, which is why they are kept singly.
