Fancy Goldfish Tank Mates

Goldfish are big, messy, coldwater fish — their best tank mates are other goldfish, not tropical community fish.

Two facts drive every goldfish pairing: they prefer cooler water than tropical fish, and they grow large and produce a heavy bio-load. The engine keeps goldfish out of tropical communities on temperature grounds, and most small fish would be eaten or out-competed anyway. Keep them with their own kind, or with hardy coldwater minnows in a big enough tank.

Tank & group guidance: Fancy goldfish need at least 20–30 gallons for the first fish and ~10–15 more per additional fish; single-tailed (common/comet) goldfish need a pond or a very large tank. Filter heavily and change water often. The planner below is pre-set to 30 gallons — add your real list to test it.

      Common questions

What fish can live with goldfish?

Other goldfish, and hardy coldwater companions such as white cloud mountain minnows or rosy red minnows in a large tank. Tropical community fish are a poor match because they need warmer water than goldfish.

Can goldfish live with tropical fish?

Generally no. Goldfish prefer cooler water (about 18–23 °C) than tropical fish, so the planner flags coldwater-plus-tropical mixes. They also grow large and may eat small tankmates.

How big a tank do goldfish need?

Far bigger than most people expect: roughly 20–30 gallons for one fancy goldfish and more for each additional fish. Common (single-tailed) goldfish reach 30 cm and really need a pond.
