Bristlenose Pleco Tank Mates

The bristlenose pleco is a peaceful, hard-working algae-eater — and unlike the common pleco, it stays a sensible size.

At around 13 cm it suits real home tanks, grazes algae, and ignores its tankmates, clearing the engine against essentially every peaceful community fish. It does produce a lot of waste, so strong filtration and driftwood (which it rasps) matter. One per tank avoids male territorial squabbles.

Tank & group guidance: Keep one in a 30-gallon tank or larger with driftwood and good filtration. They are peaceful but messy, so keep up water changes. The planner below is pre-set to 30 gallons — add your real list to test it.

      Common questions

What fish can live with a bristlenose pleco?

Almost any peaceful community fish: tetras, rasboras, livebearers, gouramis, corydoras and angelfish. The bristlenose keeps to surfaces and the bottom and does not bother tankmates.

How big do bristlenose plecos get?

About 12–13 cm — small enough for a 30-gallon tank, unlike the common pleco, which reaches 45 cm and needs a huge aquarium.

Do bristlenose plecos eat all algae?

They are excellent algae grazers but will not clear every type, and they need supplementary food (algae wafers, vegetables) and driftwood to rasp. Do not rely on them as a sole "clean-up" fix.
